Proposal #5: The LGBTQ+ “Aye-Aye” Awards

The best LGBTQ+ ads that moves us to tears, breaks boundaries, inspires hope, radiates love, and teaches us more about humanity

Why did we call this award “Aye-Aye”

Aye-Aye is this fantastic animal from Madagascar. Fantastic as in fantastically weird.

The World Wildlife Fund calls it “the world’s weirdest primate”. Howstuffworks.com just starts off with “Aye-Ayes have a very odd appearance.” No offense. Other reviews of the animal don’t get much better:

“One of the strangest”

- BBC

“Bizarre”

- Theconversation.com

“Spooky creature endangered by superstition”

- NBC News

“Creepy-cute”

- Treehugger

“The mere sight of an aye-aye is thought to foretell sickness and death in a village”

- The Lemur Conservation Foundation

“Cursed yet adorable”

- ZME Science.

Even the name is confusing, just like how “LGBTQ+” is confusing. Do we capitalize the second A, or should we spell it as “Aye-aye”? What’s the deal with the dash in between, and whey did we need to call its name twice? Like… do they have another cousin with just “Aye”?

They’re described as introverted and won the nomination for being “the world’s 25 most endangered primate.”

Nadia just felt like she found an odd kindred spirit. So, when we were figuring out what to name our award after, we named it after the Aye-Aye.
